What Are the 5 Rules of Pickleball? Beginner’s Guide to Playing Right

Pickleball is taking the world by storm, and for good reason. It’s fast, fun, easy to learn, and suitable for nearly all ages. But before you grab your paddle and hit the court, it’s essential to understand the basic rules that govern the game.

Whether you're new to the sport or just need a quick refresher, here are the five core rules of pickleball to help you play confidently and correctly.

1. The Serve Must Be Underhand

Every pickleball rally begins with a serve. The serve must be made underhand, with the paddle striking the ball below the waist. It must be hit diagonally into the opposite service box and must land beyond the non-volley zone (the "kitchen"). No bouncing the ball before hitting it unless you’re using the drop serve option.

2. The Double Bounce Rule Applies

After the serve, the receiving team must let the ball bounce once before returning it. Then, the serving team must also let it bounce once before hitting it back. This “double bounce” rule prevents either side from charging the net immediately and ensures a more balanced start to each rally.

3. Stay Out of the Kitchen—Unless It Bounces

The non-volley zone, known as “the kitchen,” is a 7-foot area on both sides of the net. Players cannot volley (hit the ball in the air) while standing in this zone. However, if the ball bounces in the kitchen first, you're allowed to enter and return it. This rule encourages longer rallies and strategic play.

4. Only the Serving Team Can Score Points

Points are only awarded to the serving team. If the receiving team wins the rally, they don’t get a point but instead earn the chance to serve. Games are typically played to 11 points and must be won by a 2-point margin.

5. Correct Serving Order Is Crucial

In doubles play, both players on a team get the opportunity to serve before the serve switches to the opposing team—except at the start of the game. The serving order must rotate after each point won, and players must serve from the correct side of the court depending on whether their team’s score is even or odd.

Play with Confidence and Comfort

Understanding the rules is just one part of the game—having the right gear helps you perform your best on the court. Lightweight, flexible men's pickleball 7 inch shorts give you full freedom to move while offering breathable comfort and practical storage for essentials like balls or a phone.

Dress Like You Mean It

Pickleball might be casual, but looking sharp while playing adds to your confidence and comfort. Whether you’re practicing serves or battling for match point, high-performance men's sportswear helps you stay cool, dry, and focused from start to finish.
