What Is the Difference Between Pickleball and Tennis?

If you've recently seen a growing number of people on courts with paddles instead of rackets, you're not alone. Pickleball is one of the fastest-growing sports in the U.S. and around the world — and it often sparks the same question from new players and onlookers alike: What is the difference between pickleball and tennis?

Though the two games share some visual similarities — courts, nets, and scoring systems — their rules, equipment, and pace of play are quite different.

Court Size and Layout

One of the most obvious differences is court size. A standard pickleball court is 20 feet wide and 44 feet long, about a quarter of a tennis court’s size. That smaller space makes pickleball more accessible to a wider range of ages and fitness levels, especially those looking for less running while still staying active.

The net in pickleball is also slightly lower than in tennis (34 inches at the center vs. 36 inches) and there’s a designated non-volley zone, often called “the kitchen,” where players can’t hit volleys.

Equipment and Ball Type

Instead of strung rackets, pickleball uses solid paddles, usually made of composite materials. The ball is also unique — it’s made of hard plastic with holes, similar to a Wiffle ball, and comes in indoor and outdoor varieties.

Tennis balls, by contrast, are pressurized and covered in felt, leading to faster speeds and more bounce. These differences in equipment greatly affect gameplay dynamics.

Style of Play

Pickleball emphasizes strategy, positioning, and reflexes over raw power. Because the court is smaller and the ball doesn’t bounce as high, players tend to rally closer to the net, making quick hands and smart placement more important than hard hits.

Tennis, on the other hand, often rewards speed, endurance, and powerful strokes from the baseline. While both games require skill and coordination, pickleball has a more approachable learning curve and is especially popular in community centers and recreational clubs.

Comfort on the Court

No matter which sport you prefer, the right gear helps elevate your game. Many players now look for performance-ready pickleball shorts with pockets — a must for holding balls and keeping essentials secure during play. Lightweight, breathable fabric combined with secure storage can make a noticeable difference in comfort and convenience on the court.

Where to Find What You Need

If you're new to either sport or just want to upgrade your wardrobe, visiting a reliable men's sportswear store is a great starting point. From moisture-wicking shirts and padded socks to stretch-fit shorts and supportive sneakers, having the right athletic wear ensures you're focused on your performance — not adjusting your clothes mid-match.
